文中にいきなり〜ing形が出てきたときは分詞構文の可能性があるのですが、この場合は違います。
文章の前の方に sitting in the cafés という語句がありますが、これは contented myself with とつながっています。reading〜とtaking〜も同様に、contented myself withとつながった動名詞なのです。
