スラッシュリーディング＋リスニング課題文

課題文の和訳

宣教師たちの物腰や、厳粛で思案ありげな表情には、私たちが彼らと他の人たちを見分けられる何かがあった。すでに片言の英語を話す１人の宣教師は、自分のことを説明するための英会話力をすぐに上達させた。

挿入語句に惑わされない

関係代名詞の先行詞は普通、すぐ前にありますが、今回の課題文では遠く離れた場所にあります。なぜそうなっているかというと、長い挿入語句があるからです。挿入語句が長いときはカッコでくくると、文の構造がはっきりします。

There was something（in the manner and the grave and thoughtful countenances of the missionaries）which enabled us to distinguish them from the rest〜

カッコでくくった挿入語句を削除すると→　There was something which enabled us to distinguish them from the rest〜 →　which の先行詞が something だということがはっきりします。
