英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

挿入句はカッコでくくる

so as to keep Paquíta for an indefinite time to herself

この部分が少しわかりにくくなっています。keep＋人名の後ろには普通、補語が来て、「〜を―に保つ」という意味になりますが、ここではkeep＋人名の後ろに前置詞が来ています。

こうした場合、前置詞句をカッコでくくると、構造がはっきりします→　so as to keep Paquíta（for an indefinite time）to herself→　カッコ部分を省きます→　so as to keep Paquíta to herself→「パキータを独り占めするために」（最後に for an indefinite time の意味を加えます）
