英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

課題文の和訳

しかしドロレスが、失われた大義と消え去った心の平安を嘆いていたのを思い出すと、明るい陽光が模様を描くように草を照らし、暖かいそよ風が私の顔をなで、頭上の木の葉の間で軽やかな音をたて、陽気な歌声の鳥たちが近くに来てくれていたにもかかわらず、私の心は痛み、涙が目に満ちた。

in spite of

in spite of =「〜にもかかわらず」

今回の課題文で使われている in spite of には３つの語句がセットになって連なっています。

　　　　　　|＿the soft, warm wind fanning my face and whispering〜
　　　　　　|＿the merry-throated birds that came to visit me

２番め、３番めの語句を in spite of と切り離すと、意味がとれなくなるので注意しましょう。
