英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

Here any number of outlaws might take refuge,／（前置詞の前）with small chance of being discovered,／（接続詞の前）or defend themselves against any force sent in pursuit,／（接続詞の前）provided they had food to hold out／（接続詞の前）until their enemies had grown weary of looking for them.
