しかし、私が肩越しに後ろを振り返ると、がっかりしたことには、漕ぎ出した岸から思っていたほど離れておらず、一方、私を喜んで迎えようとしているジェリーが立っている岸からはまだ遠く離れていることがわかった。
今回の課題文には not so〜as―（「―ほど〜でない」）が使われていますが、so と as の間に関係副詞節が挟み込まれているので、気をつけて読まないと見落とすおそれがあります。挿入語句や修飾語句があるときは、カッコでくくると、文の構造がはっきりします。
