スラッシュリーディング＋リスニング課題文

So strongly did the sight of that old man impress me that I could not get his image out of my mind, and I spoke to those I knew in the city, and before long I met with one who was able to satisfy my curiosity about him.（A Traveller in Little Things by W. H. Hudson）

英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

So strongly did the sight of that old man impress me／（接続詞の前）that I could not get his image out of my mind,／（接続詞の前）and I spoke to those I knew in the city,／（接続詞の前）and before long I met with one／（関係代名詞の前）who was able to satisfy my curiosity about him.

読解のヒント

get his image out of my mind→　get ● out of one’s mind =「●を頭から追い出す」

those I knew in the city→　I の前の関係代名詞 whom が省略されています。those whom〜は「〜する人々」という意味です。

課題文の和訳

あの老人の姿があまりに印象的だったので、私は彼のイメージを忘れられなかった。そこで私は、町での知り合いたちに話を聞いたが、間もなく、老人に対する私の好奇心を満足させられる人に出会った。

so〜that構文の倒置

今回の課題文では so〜that構文が使われていますが、普通の形とは異なり、倒置になっています。so〜が文頭に来ているため、その後ろが疑問文の語順になっているのです。

So strongly did the sight of that old man impress me that I could not〜→　So strongly の後が did＋主語＋動詞の原形（疑問文の形）になっています。

通常の語順にすると→　The sight of that old man impressed me so strongly that I could not〜
