読解のヒント

the ship was to remain→　be動詞＋to不定詞 = 〜する予定だ

to have one or two slight defects made good, and to take in a supply of beef, fresh and salt→　to have〜と to take〜は不定詞（目的）で、「〜するため」という意味です。

Mr Brand going to look after us→　Mr Brand を意味上の主語とする分詞構文（独立分詞構文）で、Captain Frankland allowed〜に付随する付帯状況になっています。
