読解のヒント

a tree overlooking the lake→　overlooking the lake は後ろから a tree を修飾しています。現在分詞の後置修飾です。

that I might ascertain→　この that は so that〜の so が省略されたものなので、「〜するように」「〜するために」という意味です。

課題文の和訳

出発する前に、ジャップと私はもう一度、湖を見渡せる木に登った。進路上に島があるかどうか、あるいは、よくあることだが、湖面が水草で覆われていて私たちの前進を邪魔しないかどうか、私が確かめられるように、だ。

ペアになっている接続詞

挿入句や関係代名詞があるため、以下の部分が訳しづらくなっています。→　 I might ascertain whether there were any islands in our course, or whether, as is often the case, the surface was covered with water-plants, which might impede our progress

ascertain whether〜は「〜かどうか確かめる」という意味ですが、whether〜が２つあります。
