読解のヒント

it struck me as a fine place→　strike●as▲ = ●に▲だと思わせる（印象を与える）

many of the streets being wide and bordered with trees→　動詞のing形の前に本文の主語とは異なる主語が置かれた独立分詞構文です（many of the streets が分詞構文の主語）。

課題文の和訳

この町について語るべきことはほとんどない。ただし、多くの通りが広く、並木で縁取られているので素敵な場所だという印象をもったし、多くの教会や病院、店、その他の公共の建物があった。

ペアになっている接続詞

except には「〜以外は」という意味があり、後ろにthat節が来ることがあります。今回の課題文で注意したいのは、that節が２つあることです。

　　　　　(and) that it contains numerous churches〜

後ろの and that を except と切り離して考えると、意味がとれなくなるので気をつけましょう。
