スラッシュリーディング＋リスニング課題文

正しい方向に向かっているかどうか

課題文の和訳

霧が晴れ、私たちに太陽が見えていたなら、暑さは増していただろうが、私たちはもっと元気だっただろう。なぜなら、正しい方向に向かっているかどうか、わかったはずだからだ。

仮定法過去完了

今回の課題文では、仮定法過去完了が使われています。

Had the fog cleared away, and enabled us to see the sun,—although the heat would have been increased,—we should have been in better spirits→　わかりやすくするために挿入節を省略します→　Had the fog cleared away, and enabled us to see the sun, we should have been in better spirits

この場合、if が省略された形になっています。if をつけると→　If the fog had cleared away, and enabled us to see the sun, we should have been in better spirits となります。

if を省略すると、疑問文の語順（倒置）になるので、課題文では Had the fog cleared away, and enabled us to see the sun となっています。
