スラッシュリーディング＋リスニング課題文

While I was endeavouring to make my horse move forward, and at the same time to unsling my rifle, expecting every moment to see the puma make its fatal spring, I heard a shot, and the animal, leaping into the air, fell over dead close to the pony’s feet. 英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

読解のヒント

I was endeavouring to〜 →　endeavour to 〜 =（〜しようと）懸命に努力する

see the puma make its fatal spring→　長い文章の途中に差し込まれていると見落としがちですが、知覚動詞＋目的語＋原形不定詞の形になっています。「ピューマが致命的な跳躍を行うのを目にする」

課題文の和訳

今にもピューマが致命的な跳躍を行うのを目にするのではないかと予期しつつ、私が馬を前に進ませようとしながら、ライフルを肩から外そうと懸命に努めていたとき、銃声が聞こえた。ピューマは宙に跳ね、ポニーの足元に倒れて死んだ。

ペアになっている不定詞

今回の課題文には、ペアになっている不定詞があります。後ろの方の不定詞を「孤立」させてしまうと意味がとれなくなるので注意が必要です。
