By chance the most imposing of the tombs was so near my seat that with little difficulty I succeeded in reading and committing to memory the whole contents of the very long inscription cut in deep letters on the hard white stone.（A Traveller in Little Things by W. H. Hudson）

英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

読解のヒント

I succeeded in reading and committing to memory〜 →　succeeded in につながる動名詞が reading と committing の２つあることに注意しましょう。

cut in deep letters→　cut は過去分詞で、前にある the very long inscription を後ろから修飾しています（過去分詞の後置修飾）。

課題文の和訳

偶然、墓石のうちで最も印象的なものが私の席のすぐ近くにあったので、私はほとんど苦労することなく、硬くて白い墓石に深く刻まれた非常に長い墓碑銘のすべての内容を読み、暗記することができた。

接続詞の後に前置詞が来たら

節と節を結ぶ接続詞の後に来るのは多くの場合、主語（名詞）ですが、前置詞が置かれる場合があります。今回の課題文にも、こんな表現があります。→　that with little difficulty I succeeded in reading〜

so〜that構文の後半ですが、that（接続詞）の後に with（前置詞）が来ています。こうした「接続詞＋前置詞」の場合、前置詞句をカッコでくくると意味をとるのが楽になります。→　that （with little difficulty）I succeeded in reading〜→「（ほとんど苦労することなく）私は読むことができた」
