英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

課題文の和訳

分詞構文

今回の課題文では、分詞構文が２つ使われています。

He looked upon it for a moment, thrusting forth his under jaw,→　彼はしばらく、それを見て、下あごを突き出し〜（「下あごを突き出しながら」）とも訳せます。

and then, hastily concealing it in the bosom of his jacket,→　そして、それをジャケットの胸元に急いで隠し〜（「胸元に急いで隠すと」）とも訳せます。

分詞構文には訳し方のパターンがいくつかありますが、「前から読み」で速読していくときは、ある程度、自由に、前後の流れに矛盾しないような意味を考えればいいと思います。
