スラッシュリーディング＋リスニング課題文

He introduced himself as Captain Norton, and told us that he had received information that a band of Indians was in the neighbourhood, and that he was about to collect a party of volunteers to defend the settlement should they exhibit any hostile intentions. 英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

語句のかたまりを前から訳していきます。

読解のヒント

he was about to collect a party→　be about to =（これから）〜しようとしている

should they exhibit any hostile intentions→　if they should exhibit any hostile intentions の if を省略したために should が前に出てきた形です。仮定法のif を省略すると、疑問文の語順になります。

課題文の和訳

彼はノートン大尉と名乗った。先住民の一団が近くにいるという情報を入手したこと、そして、彼らが敵意を示した場合に入植地を守るために、義勇兵の一隊を組織しようとしていることを私たちに告げた。

接続詞thatの役割

今回の課題文には、接続詞の that が３つ出てきます。それぞれの役割を正確につかまないと、意味がとれなくなります。

told us that〜 →「〜ということを私たちに告げた」。that〜は told の内容を示しています。

information that〜 →「〜という情報」。that〜は information の内容を示しています。これは「同格のthat」で、前の名詞に「〜という」でつなげます。

and that〜「〜ということを私たちに告げた」。that〜は前の方にある told us につながっています。told の内容が、最初と３番めの that で示されているわけです。
