読解のヒント

to lay hold of the legs of some of the waders→　この to不定詞は前の名詞 an opportunityを後ろから修飾しています（形容詞用法）。　

lay hold of→　「捕らえる」「つかまえる」

課題文の和訳

ところどころスイレンの間から、小型のワニの幸せそうな家族が見えた。彼らは水辺を歩く鳥たちの脚を捕らえるチャンスを待っていたが、鳥たちは非常に用心深いため、そんな罠にはかからなかった。

分詞＋関係代名詞

今回の課題文では、接続詞ではなく、分詞と関係代名詞が「つなぎ役」になっています。

waiting for an opportunity to lay hold of the legs of some of the waders→「waiting（現在分詞）〜waders」の意味上の主語は a happy family of small alligatorsです。「そして、彼らは〜を待っていた」という意味になります（分詞の後置修飾の非制限用法）。

who were, however, too cautious to be so entrapped→　こちらは関係代名詞の非制限用法です。
