英文を前から読んでいくために、語句のかたまりを作ります。こんな具合に課題文をスラッシュ（斜め線）で区切ります（スラッシュリーディング）。語句のかたまりを意識すると、リスニングで英語の意味をつかむのが楽になります。

At last the speakers seemed to have paused／（接続詞の前）and perhaps to have sat down,／（接続詞の前）for not only did they cease to draw any nearer,／（接続詞の前）but the birds themselves began to grow more quiet／（接続詞の前）and to settle again to their places in the swamp.
