スラッシュリーディング＋リスニング課題文

She was surprised to hear a step on the gravel path in the garden, a booted step, which suggested a white man rather than a native, for she had not heard a motor drive up, and she could not imagine who could be coming to see her at that time of night. (The Letter by W. Somerset Maugham）

課題文の和訳

彼女は、庭の砂利道を歩く足音を聞いて驚いた。ブーツを履いた足音で、現地の人ではなく白人のようだった。彼女が驚いたのは、車が近づいてくる音が聞こえなかったし、夜のこんな時間に訪ねて来る人なんて想像できなかったからだ。

英文の構造

今回の課題文にはポイントが２つあります。

a booted step, which suggested a white man rather than a native は前にある a step の説明になっています。a step に対して「ブーツを履いた足音で、現地の人ではなく白人のようだった」という説明を加えているわけです。
for she had not heard〜の for は「なぜなら〜」という意味ですが、何の理由が記されているかというと、She was surprised（彼女は驚いた）の理由です。a booted step, which suggested a white man rather than a native が for の前に挟み込まれているので分かりにくくなっています。
